Ice and Fire — mod for adding dragons and mythical creatures to Minecraft

Minecraft version tested and written about: 1.20.1

Supported version range: 1.10.2 – 1.20.1

Dependencies: Citadel. For versions 1.12.2 and below, LLibrary is required instead

Ice and Fire adds a complete dragon system to Minecraft — from wild predators patrolling the sky to tamable reptiles you can fly. In vanilla, there is only one dragon — the Ender Dragon, and the decorative dragon egg has no mechanics. The mod turns dragons into a separate progression branch: you have to track them down, kill them for resources, obtain eggs, and raise your own flying mount. Besides dragons, it fills the world with dozens of other mythical creatures and related equipment.

Three types of dragons

There are three breeds in the world, each with its own breath, habitat, and egg colors. Wild individuals are always aggressive and cannot be tamed directly.

Each dragon goes through five stages of development. At stage one, it is a vulnerable hatchling smaller than a block; at stage five, it is a massive beast with 500 health points and its own armor points. With each stage, its size, damage, and breath range increase.

Taming and raising

There is only one way to tame a dragon — hatch it from an egg. The egg itself drops only from a stage 4–5 female, and only with a small chance; stage five females sometimes drop two or three eggs. Look for such dragons sleeping in underground caverns full of treasure.

After death, the dragon does not disappear but falls to the ground as a carcass. To collect the loot, click on the body with an empty hand — items will drop one by one until the carcass turns into a skeleton and vanishes. You can distinguish the sex before killing by appearance: males have straight horns and "patched" wings, females have curved horns and straight wings; male lairs also contain more loot.

The egg hatches into a baby dragon (stage 1), which is tamed by the player who placed the egg. Then it must be raised:

Each stage lasts about 25 in-game days, full growth to stage five — approximately 125 days.

Growth can be accelerated with special food (Dragon Meal), crafted from dragon bones and any raw meat.

A baby can be placed on your shoulder; you are allowed to ride the dragon from the third stage.

The dragon's stage can be checked by interacting with it while sneaking.

Lightning dragon egg: as soon as it hatches, the baby is struck by lightning and catches fire. Keep water nearby, otherwise the newborn dragon may burn.

Dragon equipment and commands

A tamed dragon has its own 5-slot inventory: four for dragon armor pieces and one for a banner. Access is granted by interacting while sneaking.

Several items help control the pet:

Dragon Command Staff — cycles through behaviors (escort, guard point, wander freely) and sets a home position when clicked while sneaking.

Dragon Horn — stores the dragon inside the item (right-click) and summons it back (hold right-click).

Dragon Bone Flute — forces a tamed flying animal to descend and land on the ground.

Dragon loot and crafting

The dragon carcass is the main source of the mod's resources. It always drops a dragon skull and bones, as well as scales, flesh, a heart, and blood.

Blood is collected by clicking on the body with an empty glass bottle. There is a nuance here: if you drain all the blood from the dragon, you will not get scales, flesh, a heart, or an egg — so for the sake of other drops, it is better not to touch the blood or take only a portion.

The obtained materials lead into their own crafting tree:

Scales are used to make dragon armor — both for the player and for the mount itself. Scales come in twelve colors corresponding to the dragon's appearance.

Bones are used to craft tools, weapons, and the aforementioned dragon meal.

Dragon Forge — a multiblock structure that, under dragon breath, smelts iron into dragonsteel ingots of three types — fire, ice, and lightning. These make the most durable equipment in the mod.

A separate item is the Bestiary, an in-game guide to dragons. It is found in chests and lairs; at first, only the introductory chapter is available, and the rest of the chapters are unlocked by found manuscripts.

Structures and world generation

The mod adds several types of objects to the world around which all resource gathering is built:

Dragon skeletons lie in deserts (fire) and in snowy tundras and on glaciers (ice) — from them you gather the first dragon bones without a fight.

Dragon roosts appear on the surface, and dragon caves — underground. It is in the underground lairs where stage 4–5 dragons sleep, gold lies, and eggs are found.

Glaciers, mausoleums, graveyards, and gorgon temples are additionally generated — these are the homes and hiding places of other creatures from the mod.

Dangerous structures do not appear too close to the player's spawn point: the minimum distance is set by the config.

Other mythical creatures

The mod is not limited to dragons. Alongside them in the world live:

Hippogryph — a hybrid of a horse and an eagle from mountain biomes. It is easier to obtain than a dragon: once tamed, it is a flying mount that can also be equipped with armor.

Amphithere — a winged serpent from the jungle, very fast in flight, also suitable as a means of transport.

Myrmex — colonies of giant insects with castes (workers, soldiers, sentinels, royals, and a queen). Attacking anyone from the colony raises the whole hive.

The world is also inhabited by sea serpents, death worms, cyclopes, sirens, gorgons, cockatrices, stymphalian birds, trolls, pixies, hydras, dread liches, and ghosts. Legendary weapons are crafted from parts of these creatures — cyclops eye, siren flute, death worm gauntlet, amphithere macuahuitl, and others, each with its own effect.

Config

The mod has a large settings file — below are the main parameters that most noticeably affect the game. Besides them, in the [Mobs] section, there are separate appearance and spawn frequency toggles for each creature, and the client file handles interface details.

Conclusion

Ice and Fire transforms the dragon from a decorative vanilla element into a long-term goal. Where Minecraft gives only the Ender Dragon and an inert egg, the mod completes the full chain — from hunting a wild beast to your own combat mount in scale armor and dragonsteel equipment. Alongside hippogryphs and amphitheres, it is rather a whole bestiary than just a "dragon mod".

The mod is large and adds many entities at once, so on weaker modpacks it is worth configuring the spawn via the config in advance. It requires the Citadel library and is best suited for survival and adventure gameplay where a distant goal and air transport are needed; for lightweight, optimization-focused modpacks it is too big.

Installation

A typical installation takes about 5 minutes. The flow is the same; only the loader and the matching build differ.

  1. Install a mod loader (Forge, Fabric or NeoForge) that matches your Minecraft version.
  2. Download the mod file (.jar) built for that same version.
  3. Place the .jar into your .minecraft/mods folder.
  4. Launch Minecraft with the modded profile and check the mod loads in-game.
